Adrienne Maxwell reviews the HD27 from Optoma. This 1080p, 3D-capable single-chip DLP projector has a rated light output of 3,200 lumens and an asking price of just $649.
The connection panel includes two HDMI 1.4 inputs, one of which supports MHL to connect a streaming stick or compatible tablet. Optoma has not included any analog video connections like component or composite video. The only other connections are a 3.5mm audio output, a 3D sync port for VESA, a 12-volt trigger (no RS-232), and a Type A USB port that can supply power to a connected peripheral like a wireless HDMI receiver.

The first three images in this photo player, were taken when I first fired up the projector, which means it was in what Optoma calls Vivid mode. If this were an LCDTV, that would probably be the equivalent of many LCDTVs “store mode”, which is to say, the settings are tweaked for a very “vivid” image, one that’s not as natural as an ideal one, but one that can look extremely good when you have ambient light present.

Optoma HD27 review: an excellent Full HD projector on a budget.
Fine detail performance is excellent. DLP projectors have a characteristic crispness which can be revelatory. The HD27 looks beautiful with good HD sources such as Blu-ray and Sky Cinema. Colour vibrancy is also high.
The Optoma HD27 is a Full HD projector for cinephiles and gamers alike. But can you really get big-screen thrills on a small-screen budget?
It transpires that the key difference between the HD27 and its HD26 predecessor is a new colour wheel. Optoma wouldn"t divulge exactly how the wheel differs, saying only that a new material has been used which enables the projector to deliver 98-99 per cent of the Rec709 colour space.
